Enhanced Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (eVCA) & Nature Based Solutions (NbS) Training

Online Sessions: 2nd & 9th April, 2025

In Person Sessions: 22nd - 26th April, 2025

Hosted by the Ecological Connectivity and Community Resilience Project

What is the eVCA?

The Enhanced Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (eVCA) is a participatory community risk assessment process. It enables communities, with the support of Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies when needed, to assess and analyse the risks they face, explore where these risks come from, which members of the community are most exposed, what coping capacities are available, and what initiatives can be undertaken to strengthen coping capacities and reduce the risks.

What is NbS?

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are actions to protect, sustainably manage or restore an ecosystem that address societal challenges, such as disaster risk, climate change, food security, water security or human health. They might include protecting and restoring forests, the protection of mangroves and coral reefs, the conservation and restoration of wetlands, or the creation of urban greenspaces. NbS can address all three components of the risk equation - preventing or mitigating hazards themselves, limiting people’s exposure to hazards and limiting people’s vulnerability.

About this Training

The eVCA NbS training program aims to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills to enhance community resilience using the eVCA tool and NbS approaches. Participants will learn to assess community vulnerabilities and capacities while implementing NbS to reduce disaster risks. A key focus of the training is knowledge sharing through peer-to-peer exchanges, fostering an active community of practice.

The training includes both online and in-person sessions. The two online sessions, open to interested individuals, introduce NbS concepts and their role in climate adaptation. These sessions serve as prerequisites for the in-person training in Grenada, which consists of five days of hands-on learning. Participants will practice using the eVCA tool in a community setting and explore ways to integrate NbS into resilience assessments. Key topics covered include Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA), NbS implementation tools like the Nature Navigator and the Blue Guide, and best practices in resilience-building.
